WHAT IS H.U.M.A.N?Having Understanding Means Acting NowThe seeds for H.U.M.A.N were planted years ago by its founders, Darrin and Alicia Liggins who, together, chose a life of service by way of a small (but mighty!) landscaping business. It became evident in the early days of their business that the labor pool was limited by the lack of or nonexistent life skills its young employees brought to work each day. To move the business along in a successful manner, the couple incorporated broader skills training and home-life support into their business model. H.U.M.A.N was conceived from these experiences and will deliver innovative stability solutions for children and families who are struggling without adequate safety nets. It is Liggins’ belief that every person should have a home, emotional support; livelihood, and a chance to build a better future; it is also their belief that human needs include certainty, variety, significance, love, connection, growth, and contribution; it is absolutely their belief that having understanding means acting now

Mission
At the core of H.U.M.A.N.’s mission is creating inclusive educational opportunities that equip diverse learners with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to thrive. As a private nonprofit, H.U.M.A.N. is uniquely positioned to provide targeted, specialized support that currently doesn’t exist in the region. With a strong board of directors and regional connections, we receive referrals from schools, parents, medical providers, church groups, and county officials who lack the resources to fully support individuals in need. After evaluation, H.U.M.A.N. will assist cases exclusively or collaborate with aligned agencies to ensure the best outcomes.
While our programs are still in development, they will be customized to fit Sequim’s demographics, ensuring our services meet the community’s specific needs. In addition to individual support, we will offer community outreach and small-group learning opportunities to empower local families and foster a more inclusive and supportive environment.

OUR HUMAN'S
Sequim, WashingtonIn Sequim, Washington, and the broader Clallam County area, several concerning statistics highlight the challenges faced by children and families, particularly in the realms of poverty, homelessness, and mental health:
Poverty Rates: In Clallam County, approximately 11.2% of residents and 23.2% of children under 18 live in poverty. Homelessness: The county's poverty rate stands at 15.3%, with more than a third (35%) of residents living below 200% of the poverty level. Approximately 2% of Clallam County residents are under-housed or homeless. Mental Health: In Clallam County, 62% of residents report having experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), and over 33% report having three or more. The county has a growing need for mental health services, with limited access to routine counseling for youth and community members due to availability of practitioners, stigma, and weak insurance coverage. These statistics underscore the critical need for comprehensive support systems in Sequim and Clallam County to address the challenges faced by children and families in our community. |
